A new heating noise is especially noticeable in a quiet home. For a noisy boiler or radiator, describing the sound and its context is more useful than naming a suspected part. “Knocking”, “whistling” and “vibration” help start a conversation, but none is a diagnosis on its own.
Locate the sound safely
Do you hear it near the boiler, along a pipe or beside one radiator? Sound can travel through the building, so report where it is heard rather than assuming where it originates. Do not touch hot components or remove a cover to listen more closely.
Timing matters as much as the sound
- Does it happen when heating starts or after it stops?
- Is hot water being used at the time?
- Is it continuous or only a few seconds long?
- Can it be heard in one room or on several floors?
A short audio recording made from a safe position can support your notes. It is useful if the sound disappears before the visit. Do not deliberately reproduce a violent or worrying noise.
Separate a clue from a confirmed cause
The manufacturer describes several possible explanations for heating noises, including air and water circulation. Similar sounds can still have different causes. Ordering a pump or requesting a system flush solely because of a recording would be premature.
Explain what happens alongside the noise: a radiator stays cold, a message appears, pressure changes or water becomes visible. If noises are suddenly severe, stop using the appliance according to its manual and seek prompt advice. If you smell gas, follow the emergency instructions.
Keep a record before and after the visit
List the rooms affected and when the noise normally occurs. Mention recent changes, such as a different heating schedule or building work. For radiator symptoms, our radiator adjustment and repair service is a useful starting point.
After the visit, ask which cause was identified and what improvement to expect. Describe any remaining sound using the same observations about timing and operation. That makes follow-up clearer and avoids comparing different operating conditions. Keep the recording with the service report for future reference.
