Hot water works but heating does not: what to check

Your Junkers boiler supplies hot water but radiators stay cold? Gather useful observations before arranging a heating repair in Brussels.

A technician in blue explains a room thermostat to a resident.

The shower works, but the home stays cold. This describes something more specific than a complete boiler failure: hot water is available while the heating demand does not produce the expected comfort. It still does not identify a faulty component remotely.

Define exactly what is affected

Establish whether every radiator is cold or only some. Note when the issue began and whether heating has worked since the last shutdown period. With communal heating, ask the building manager whether other homes are affected too.

Information available at the user controls

  • The mode and schedule shown on the room controller.
  • The measured room temperature and requested temperature.
  • Any message on the boiler or thermostat.
  • The visible display response when heating is requested.

Only change user settings described in the manual. A holiday programme or summer mode may explain why heat is not being requested, but check your specific appliance rather than assuming all menus behave alike.

Avoid jumping to a repair decision

Working hot water does not prove that the entire heating circuit is healthy. Equally, cold radiators do not automatically mean the boiler needs replacement. Controls, circulation and system components are among the areas a professional may assess.

Avoid repeated resets and leave wiring alone. Do not dismantle valves. If a smell, leak or unusual behaviour appears, stop the trial and explain that change when you call.

Make the appointment more useful

A clear description would be: “In Etterbeek, hot water works at every tap; no radiator has warmed since heating was restarted; the thermostat shows a heat request.” Include photographs of the displays and the model reference.

Our page on thermostats and heating controls explains this part of the service. For daily operation, see the guide to thermostat schedules and radiator valves.

Check the outcome after the visit

Ask which settings to retain and how long the installation needs to return to normal operation. Check comfort in the affected rooms during the next scheduled heating period. Keep the report and distinguish between the original fault continuing and a new symptom appearing. This avoids losing useful detail if a follow-up conversation is required.
